The play Die Mutter tells the story of the emancipation of a simple woman who evolves from a caring mother at peace with the conditions that she lives in into a staunch revolutionary. Her transformation begins when her son Pawel joins the revolutionary worker’s movement in post-war Russia. Because she is afraid of losing him, she starts learning about the Marxist-proletarian movement and, realising that she has choices in her life, becomes a burning advocate of the revolution. And yet, she will not be able to save her son.
Die Mutter is the third production by the Austrian-Bulgarian director Christina Tscharyiski at Berliner Ensemble. Her work is distinguished by a high degree of musicality, strength and powerful imagery.
