An interior decorator obsessed with the North has left his native Switzerland for a three year hiatus in the Orkney Islands, hoping for undisturbed days devoted mostly to aesthetic absorption, nordic minimalism and foraged food. Into his quiet life comes the invitation to whitewash the walls of an immense underground data storage centre in Norway. He accepts, and after travelling to Norway to scope out the task, he is sucked by cosmic forces into a time/space vortex that looks back to a prehistoric trauma and forward to some future apocalypse, both refracted through a disintegrating intelligence, his own. More than anything, though, this is a poignant novel about hope and how it can endure in a world where everything else seems to have lost all meaning. Journeying from a place we know into the new and unknown, "Air" suspires the emotional truths of our times.
