The stories of the naughty boys Max and Moritz have not always been beyond dispute: After their publications, they were banned for young people of less than 18 years of age in some regions. The reasons are evident: Slander, multiple criminal damage, theft, trespass, animal torture and grievous bodily harm – these are the criminal offences that Max and Moritz have to answer for. Antú Romero Nunes will translate this wicked ur-comic into his own theatrical language. He is just as much interested in the story’s wickedness and lack of moral implication as in what we do not see in the pictures and only suspected so far…
The critics’ survey of the magazine Theater heute chose Antú Numero Nunes as Emerging Director of the year 2010. In 2012, he received the Kurt-Hübner-Preis as an advancement award for a young director’s work and was distinguished with the Friedrich-Luft-Preis. Nunes opened the Berliner Ensemble’s era under the artistic direction of Oliver Reese with his production of “Caligula”. Now he is fascinated by Wilhelm Busch’s story of naughty boys and will retell it at Berliner Ensemble with a relish for malice and humour and with plenty of music.
