If you are sleeping on a pull-out sofa in your ex-wife’s garage and your own son only communicates with you in grunts, it’s high time for a change of scenery. Fifty-year-old Wheeler, caustic but likeable, has hit rock-bottom. Whatever is to come can only be better – or the beginning of the end. Moving into an apartment of his own is Wheeler’s attempt at a fresh start, but he finds that his downward spiral cannot be stopped. Tracy Letts’ new comedy uses the model of an average biography in a veritable crisis of life and purpose to ask: Why do we continue to carelessly destroy what is right for us in the greedy pursuit of what is wrong? Why are old patterns always more tempting than a sincere desire for change, and which promises and ideals are strong enough to risk exposing ourselves to ridicule and vulnerability?
