Following the flood of cruel dictators brought forth by the 20th century, Macbeth joins Hamlet in the array of archetypal characters. His will to power is spurred on to the point where he has reached a position he can no longer fill. He tries to combat his anxiety by ever more extreme violence and is only able to relish his reign over others in sadistic commands. Heiner Müller’s translation is much more than a mere adaptation. It is an original drama about the dialectics of power and demonstrates how history becomes a realm stripped of utopian notions when the future dies away in the very instant of action. A society bent exclusively on maintaining its status quo becomes rigid in fear of itself and brings forth cruelty instead of hope.
Director Michael Thalheimer is among the most renowned directors of the German-language theatre. His productions have received numerous awards and have toured worldwide. During the 2018/19 season, Michael Thalheimer will explore the works of Shakespeare at Berliner Ensemble.
We regularly present performances of "Macbeth" with English surtitles. You can find the dates here. Our box office staff will be happy to tell you from which seats you will have a good sight-line to the surtitles. For the best view of both stage and surtitles, we recommend seats in the stalls (Parkett) from row 11, or in the balconies (1. Rang, 2. Rang). Seats in the side boxes have a partially obstructed view.
