The credo of "From the freedom of science towards the ethics of science!" describes the shift of Bertolt Brecht’s interest in the subject matter of "Galilei".
Beginning with his first drafts written in exile in 1937, his preoccupation with this scientist from the Renaissance resulted in three versions of a theatre play. Brecht passed away in 1956, while he was rehearsing the play with the legendary Ernst Busch playing the lead role. In 2019, Jürgen Holtz, long-time associate of Berliner Ensemble, will perform the title role. A look back at hopeful beginnings of scientific research in the face of sinister portents on the planetary horizon.
