Les Misérables

In this stunning fresco of the 19th century, Victor Hugo tells the story of convict Jean Valjean and his adversary, the policeman Javert. After a defining encounter with the aged Bishop of Digne, Valjean decides to lend his service to what is good from now on. While he raises his ward Cosette, the relentless Javert pursues him, determined to enforce the letter of the law. The central issue here is justice, which, as the title suggests, must first and foremost be granted to those who have no part in the world’s riches. Frank Castorf is the first to adapt the famous material for a non-musical stage and this production marks his first return to the Berliner Ensemble since 1996.
