“Let the world bow to me or break”, says Ubu. He believes in neither democracy, equal rights nor climate change – all that counts is his insatiable hunger. When asociality and narcissism become the political system, reality degenerates into the point of view of those in power. Today, the scandal caused by Jarry’s gorging and murderous King Ubu in 1896 seems harmless in the face of a political landscape that gives power to those who make the most shameless grabs for it and rewards those who scream the loudest and always find someone else to blame. Belgian author and director Stef Lernous has written a new version of the grotesque story about the murderous egomaniac Ubu, transposing it into his own fathomlessly sombre world of images.
“Ubu Rex” is created as part of the Series of Excellence with the support of Deutsche Bank Stiftung.
