The program
The Berliner Ensemble is looking for young theatre makers to apply to its residency program WORX 2025/26. We are inviting two artistic personalities with exceptional esthetic or strong content related issues to call the Berliner Ensemble their artistic home for a season. Over the course of the season (September 2025 to July 2026), they will be given the workshop space of the Berliner Ensemble, the Werkraum, to realize two productions each. In addition, smaller events such as readings, performances or discourse formats may be organized on a monthly basis. As part of the residency, they will be given the opportunity to collaborate with the ensemble and the dramaturgy department, as well as visit the rehearsals of directors closely associated with the Berliner Ensemble. A festival weekend will conclude the residency, where the works created will be presented to an interested audience, the press and theatre experts.
The aim is to provide theatre makers with a space in which they are free to work and create while providing them with contractual security. To this end, we offer a fixed engagement for one season and commit to two premieres of one small and one large scale production. Along with an artistic team and two to five actors (guests & BE ensemble), sufficient budget will be provided for the realization of the projects. As the residency aims at a close collaboration with the BE, only one external project is possible during the fixed engagement.
Application
The application is open to artists with theater experience at the beginning of their career, such as a diploma in directing or having worked as a director’s assistant or in the independent scene. The call is explicitly aiming to include interdisciplinary artists and international candidates, as well. Good basic knowledge of the German language is not required, but desirable. It is also possible to apply as a team or collective, provided there is already a joint work practice that justifies this. A jury of experts will select two directors or teams. Interviews with selective candidates will be held in December 2024.
Your application should include
- a cover letter including a description of at least one project idea for the Werkraum
- Curriculum vitae
- an artistic dossier with video recordings, image material and press reports (digital)
- current performance dates of your own productions
