“The family is the smallest cell of society“, this was a popular saying not only in the GDR. But what does this mean today? Who is included in this notion of family?
In Axel Ranisch’s latest comedy, written for Berliner Ensemble with his husband Paul Zacher, many different fortunes, people, generations and family constellations end up in the office of housing administrator Braunert in Berlin-Lichtenberg: After all, everybody needs to live somewhere. And what if we all moved in together? A great idea, if only everybody did not have their own notions of the world, of love and happiness. There is only one thing they can all agree on: Music makes everything easier to bear.
“Mutti, was machst du da?” is film and opera director Axel Ranisch’s first work at Berliner Ensemble.
